On Valentine's Day 2008, Josie and Wyatt Earp brought into this world - 5 beautiful Red Heeler Puppies. Everything seemed to be going as planned until the day I decided it was time to start them on puppy gruel. The smallest puppy, a female, jumped into the puppy gruel head first...then all of a sudden, she pulled back and started choking. I grabbed her, emptied her mouth, and headed for the house to clean out her nose.

Over the next few days, she continued to do this. I searched for answers. I checked for a cleft palate, but everything seemed fine.

A couple of weeks later when it was apparent that this puppy was not ready for solid foods, we brought her in and nursed her with a syringe and puppy formula. Although she remained small and thin, she had the heart of a giant. I named her Calamity. A good name for a dog that would throw up every time she ate!

Over the next 3 weeks Calamity stole our hearts! She slept in the bed with us and chased the jack russells around the house. She even went outside and beat up on her sisters. Everyday that I would come home, she would great me at the door with everyone else. She learned very quickly that a syringe meant food and she would eagerly attack it.

I tried EVERYTHING....puppy formula, pudding, canned puppy food, Nutri-Cal, whole milk (straight and diluted), pedialyte, pepto bismol...you name it. I even fed her standing up on a box so the food would go down easier. Some times she would eat better than others, but everytime she ate, she would throw it back up again.

I turned to the internet and researched everything that I could find. Everything lead to Megaesophagus - a condition where the esophagus is enlarged like a balloon and the muscles do not carry the food to the stomach, but let's it pool up and then it is regurgitated. The worse was coming true, Calamity was developing aspiration pneumonia...a fatal side-effect of Megaesophagus.

I turned to our friend Teresa Henderson who is a vet tech. She asked me to let her take her to her office and run a set of x-rays.

On Monday, April 21st I awoke an hour early due to a car alarm going off. With 14 dogs, a car alarm means every dog in the neighborhood is going crazy. I chose to take this time and spend quality time with Calamity. Since I had not fed her the night before or that morning, she was not gagging and not throwing up. She was very playful and sat in my lap and yipped and snapped at the other dogs if they came near me. Yes, she was very spoiled!!!

For the first time ever, Cowboy ran and chased her, playing with her. Until this point, he was always scared of her. Maybe it was because she was always gagging and throwing up, who knows. But they played and they chased each other through the bedroom. I guess because she was so full of energy, I let my hopes get too high.

Teresa called me later that afternoon and confirmed what I already knew in my head, but could not bare to accept in my heart! MEGAESOPHAGUS. Her little lungs were full with pneumonia and we had to make the decision to go ahead and put her down. I am so grateful to Teresa for handling all this for me. I know it was not easy for her since she had had the chance to spend the day with Calamity and she was such a character. You would have to have known her to understand what I'm saying.

She only had 9 weeks on this earth, but she knew she was truly loved and was a happy puppy none the less.

Randy built her a little wooden casket and buried her in the pasture, facing the barn. She was buried beside Jag, my beloved Blue Heeler.

If anyone knew Cheyenne, our little Jack that died last year, you will all laugh at the thought of Cheyenne and Calamity Jane tearing up Heaven right now!

You are loved and missed Calamity Jane!!! Until we meet at the Rainbow Bridge...I love you! Your mama...

Bandits first drill team show

What a boy!!! Bandit's first drill team performance and he was just awesome! Not bad at all for a 4 year old stallion who had never been touched just one and a half years ago. Not only did he wear a grass skirt, but he carried a flag (in some strong winds), and was surrounded by LADIES! I just can't get over how great this boy has become! Randy has done an awesome job of training him and I couldn't ask for a better pair!

Bandit is the sire to both our babies - Julia and Kawliga. He is open to mares for breeding in 2007 for $300.00, plus $5.00 per day mare care.

At 6 weeks old, the vets all said to put you down. You had already stolen our hearts and we prayed for a miracle. God gave it to us.

7 glorious months after surgery filled with lots and lots of love, we watched you grow from 1.5 lbs. at surgery to a whopping 6.1 lbs. You were the apple in all our eyes.

Sadly a fight with a neighbor's dog, 4 hours of fighting for your life in the ER, and we had to let you go. It was so hard to do, but God said you needed to be the apple in His eyes now.

Cheyenne, we love you...we will always love you!

A Happy and Healthy Wyatt - Just one Month Later

Just one month after our horrible ordeal with Wyatt and Parvo, he is happy and healthy! Although blind, you would never know it to watch him. He is one happy boy!!!

What you DON'T know about parvo, can kill your dog!

On Thursday evening, October 26th, our Red Heeler Puppy Wyatt acted "a little off". Knowing that he had had all of his shots, I just told him that if he wasn't feeling any better by morning that we were going to the doctor's office.

By the time I found a vet in the office the next morning, Wyatt was all but gone. Diagnosis: Parvo

How could this be? Wyatt had had all his shots and had never been anywhere but the house and the fenced in front yard.

3 nights in emergency care and approximately $1,700 later...Wyatt has recovered, but is totally blind. Don't feel sorry for Wyatt. He certainly doesn't feel sorry for himself and there is nothing he can't do, but if we had had any inclination that puppies can get parvo EVEN IF THEY HAVE HAD ALL THEIR SHOTS, he would have been at the vets office late Thursday night!

Please do research on parvo. Dogs can get parvo anytime and any place. If your dog is a "little off", take them to the vet immediately regardless of their shot records.

Randy and I have chosen to vaccinate our dogs now through 1 year old. Yes, it will cost a little bit more money, but over the long run, it's ALOT cheaper than $1,700 emergency vet bills...and we came so close to losing the little buddy AND STILL HAVING THE VET BILLS!

Wyatt is getting stronger and stronger every day and I am forever thankful to Dr. Cinque at the Marietta Animal Hospital. Without her urgency and putting up with a hysterical ME, Wyatt certainly would not be here today! I am forever grateful to her!

So now I am a SEEING EYE PERSON for Mr. Wyatt...that's like the blind leading the blind, but we're together and happy and that's all that matters!

Symptoms of parvo:
vomiting
diahrea
lethargy
refusing to eat

Please, please, please do not wait. If your dog is showing any signs of parvo...get them to the vet immediately!!!

Update on Miss Golden Booty - Cheyenne

Cheyenne went to the vet on Thursday, September 7th for a check up and to get her final shots for the year. She now weighs a whopping 4.7 lbs.!!! She will go in next month for a little "nip and tuck" just to make the hole a little bigger, as she is outgrowing the one originally made. She will have that done the same time she is being spayed.

That's a long way from the 1.5 lbs. that she weighed the day of her surgery!!!

This is Cheyenne on 9/9/06 sitting in my mom's lap. She was so sleepy and didn't appreciate the camera flashing in her face. The other picture is her mama as a puppy. Isn't she the spitting image of her mama??? And yes, Tehya's ears do lay down now. Tehya is 2 1/2 years old and still mama's baby. Tehya means "Precious One" in Native American. Pronounced Tay Ha'.

Three weeks ago, I found a Red Heeler puppy. I have wanted one for almost 10 years.

I named her Josie (after Josephine Earp - wife of Wyatt Earp).

Well you just can't have a Josie without a Wyatt, so on Saturday we drove down to Wildwood and found the perfect Wyatt!

He is 9 weeks old and such a love bug!!!

He is the little guy on the left, pictured with his brother! And the one on the ground in the picture with Josie....but trust me, he can take care of himself! He runs across the yard and TACKLES Josie! He has big feet and is going to outgrow her one day!

This is Cheyenne, 3 weeks after surgery and doing great!!!

What a little spit-fire! She is over 2 lbs. now and thinks she is 50 lbs. She does not want the chew sticks unless they are in another dog's mouth, and then she just walks right up to them and takes it right out of their mouth! They know they can't do anything about it without getting into trouble, so they just give in!

Today Cheyenne had her 1 week vet check-up

She now weighs 1.8 lbs.!!!! I'm wondering if she will ever catch up with her brothers and sister.

The doctors called her their "little miracle", but we all know that she is everyone's little miracle. You can't help but look into her eyes and fall in love with her!

They said that her stitches are dissolving well and she will not need to come back again for 4 months, to be spayed. Dr. Ellison (the butt doctor) wants to do that surgery himself. She is off of all pain meds completely and is going to try to come off of her colon mobility meds. Antibiotics are almost done as well. She is slowly, but surely becoming a normal dog!

And best of all, they didn't charge anything for the check-up today!

Got a call on Thursday around 1:30 p.m. that Cheyenne was being released and ready to come home! I couldn't believe it! The doctor told us Friday at best, but maybe Saturday!

She was so perky and besides her HUGE BUTT you couldn't tell anything is even wrong with her!

A re-check appointment next Thursday and then stitches come out the week after that and then she should be a normal dog....well, as normal as can be expected!

Thanks for everyone's prayers and support! It has been a roller coaster ride of emotions for the past 4 1/2 weeks for sure!!!

This is Cheyenne on Memorial Day Week-end, playing with her brother Camo. As you can see, Camo is almost 3 times her size, but she does not care. Teeth showing and look at those red eyes! She means business!!! This is why we fought so hard to keep this little girl alive! She has more fight and grit in her than any dog I've ever seen!

Reports are that Cheyenne is peeing normally, but they are just waiting for her to take her first poop. She has to teach her body how to use her new "hole". Hopefully she will be able to come home Friday or Saturday! Keep those prayers coming! They are definitely working!

Cheyenne is out of surgery!!!!

Dr. Fick called around 12:30 and said that Cheyenne was out of surgery and that everything went well, she was waking up, and actually eating a little bit of specialty dog food. (Something I am going to have to STRESS to my mom that she will be required to eat special food for some time, possibly forever!!!)

Dr. Fick sounded very enthusiastic. Although she has been super nice, she always had a sound of concern in her voice. When I answered the phone and heard her "enthusiastic" voice, I knew that everything had gone well.

Agda (the sr. student) in charge of Cheyenne has been tremendous! She has called me several times to let me know how Chey was doing and told me that everyone is carrying her around everywhere and spoiling her rotten. She said that they all played with her until 11:00 p.m. last night and Chey was barking and growling and having a good time! That did my heart good!!!! I went to bed last night thinking that my baby girl was sleeping alone in a crate for the first time since she was 2 weeks old. I'm betting that she was pretty tired after all that playing and ready for some sleep. She will go to the door and scratch on the door when she is ready for bed! She's a pretty determined little girl! And of course, she ALWAYS gets her way!!! Rotten thing!

So now we are just waiting for her new plumbing to start working. Two good days of pooping and she will be able to come home!

I am hoping that she gets to come home for the drawing on Friday night! After all, it is ALL ABOUT HER!!!!

Just got THE CALL!!!

Today I received a message from the University of Florida. Cheyenne has an appointment next Tuesday with surgery scheduled for Wednesday.

Am I scared - HECK YES!!!

Leaving her there on Tuesday is going to be so hard, but I know that this is what we have to do to help her survive!

Please keep Cheyenne in your prayers that she makes it through the surgery and that it is a success!!!

Also don't forget to get your raffle tickets for the breeding to our stallion! This is how I am hoping to raise money for Chey's surgery!

Cheyenne has a good Memorial Day Week-end!

Cheyenne turned 9 weeks old on Memorial Day! She has gained a little weight and we are anxiously awaiting the call from the "butt doctor" at the Small Animal Hospital at the University of Florida to schedule her surgery.

Cheyenne spent the week-end rough-housing with all the other jacks in the family. We had to pull her off of them several times! She gets so dang rough, and you should hear her growl! More like a squeak, but it is funny!

Please keep Cheyenne in your prayers that we are able to schedule surgery soon and that all goes well during surgery. If you get a chance to meet her, she will definitely steal your heart!!!

Raising surgery funds for Cheyenne

Cheyenne's surgery is estimated to run about $1,500 (barring no complications).

I am going to raise the money so that she has a chance to live a normal life by -

1) Offering raffle tickets for a breeding to our black and white overo stallion JSM Doc Bandit (either 2006 or 2007 year, your choice) - Tickets are $1.00 each. Drawing will be held Friday evening, June 9th.

2) Offering a breeding FOR SALE to our stallion for $250.00

2) Selling the remainder of the puppies (all males) in Cheyenne's litter (they are perfectly healthy)

All proceeds with go straight to the University of Florida in Cheyenne's account and any donations exceeding her needs will be donated to a patient in need there. Make all checks out to FVMFA, Inc. (Florida Veterinary Medicine Faculty Assoc. Inc.)

UPDATE: Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006 - Cheyenne had her road trip to the Small Animal Hospital at the University of Florida today. She was seen by a couple of students (Kara and Stacey) and Dr. Fick (all very, very nice ladies!!!) Cheyenne has what is called "Atresia Ani" - no anal opening. She weighed in at just over 1 lb. Dr. Fick said that surgery and anesthesia is a danger with her being so tiny, so we have brought her back to home to try to fatten her up a bit and let her grow some. She just turned 8 weeks old yesterday. Dr. Ellison (known at the hospital as the BUTT DOCTOR) is on vacation, so they wanted to wait until he was back in town before attempting surgery. X-rays were done and she is not blocked or backed up, so the surgery is not an emergency at this point. So we are keeping our fingers crossed and praying that she continues to get stronger, awaiting surgery. One of my biggest worries was that after surgery, she would not get the attention in the hospital that she gets at home. One of the vet students (Stacey) said that she would put her in her pocket and do rounds with her....I think she'll get alot of attention at the hospital!!!

On March 27th, my Jack Russell "Tehya" gave birth to 6 puppies. The 4th puppy born was a tiny little red female with no tail at all. We call her Cheyenne.

Cheyenne was always "special" as she was the tiniest, so I watched her more than any of the others. When she was just 2 weeks old, her mama would grab her, take her out of the bathtub (where I raised the puppies) and bring her and drop her off beside my bed. I would hear her crying and reach over and put her in the bed with me.

Recently Cheyenne starting becoming constipated and I looked her over, thinking I could just do an enema and she would be fine....well, imagine my surprise when I looked and there was no "hole". Yes, it appears that Cheyenne has no anal opening and is defecating through her vagina. She was taken to the vet where all he said was "keep her food moist, her stool soft, and once she gets where she can't poop anymore, bring her in and we'll put her to sleep"! WHAT???

I spent the day researching on the internet and LOTS AND LOTS OF TEARS (and by the way, there is very little on there about this), but I did run across a few stories of puppies having this problem and the surgery that can possibly be done. Thank you to all the support from my friends at Flahorse.com and Floridaequineand more! You have truly inspired me to continue moving forward and not giving up!

I have called the University of Florida and made an appointment for Tuesday the 23rd. Please pray that Cheyenne is surgery optional and that we can afford this surgery....and most of all, that she makes it through this surgery. I worry about her being so little! But the vet could not believe that she was so healthy and full of life with everything she is going through. Most puppies with this problem die within a week or so. Hey, at least she has a "hole" for everything to come out. Most of the stories that I have read have been male dogs with "no other opening"!!!

Please keep Cheyenne in your prayers. She has been a miracle baby so far and I know with everyone's prayers that she can pull off another miracle with all our love and support!

Spring is in the air and that means that breeding season is among us! Check out the mares that will be producing gorgeous babies for 2007!

APHA Blair aka "Boo" is the sorrel over mare.
APHA Sheza Poboys Playboy aka "Cherokee" is the black overo mare
APHA Brothers Blessing aka "Chance" is the red roan overo mare.
APHA BBF Jet Stepin Beauty aka "Sky" is the bay tobiano mare and will be bred next year for a 2008 baby.

The "gentleman" having his feet trimmed is APHA JSM Doc Bandit. (Man, I need a better picture of him, he is so gorgeous!!!)

On Tuesday, December 27th Bandit officially became UNDER SADDLE! I know I should have taken pictures of Randy laying all over him bareback like a couch!

New Litter of Jack Russell Puppies Have Arrived...

5 Jack Russell Puppies arrived between 1:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 20th.

Mother: Maverick (black and white)
Dad: Jesse James (red and white)

One black and white male
One brown and white female (unfortunately did not survive)
Three brown and white males

They will be $250.00 each.

They are having their little tails docked and their dew claws removed this Friday and will be ready for their new homes the beginning of February. Maverick will then enjoy a vacation living with her Nanny for a much needed vacation from having puppies. But she is such a WONDERFUL mom and really enjoys her babies!

Maverick was my very first Jack Russell and the reason for my Jack Russell Obsession!

All the Blue Heeler puppies have been sold. It was alot of fun raising them. I have not raised a litter of Blue Heelers in about 7 years or so. I'll have to find a picture of my old buddy Roper (their grand-dad) and post here. He was a super, super dog!

Bandit doing wonderful after only one month!

For a horse that was raised in a pasture with 100 other horses like cattle. The only contact that he had with humans was being run through a cattle shoot....Bandit has made tremendous progress!

On Saturday, December 10th (after only one month), he was able to have his feet trimmed for the very first time! Baby has a brand new pair of shoes! He is so loving and quite the lady's man. He has all our mares in season!!!!

The next update will hopefully have Bandit "under saddle"!

A Working Project....

Here is our barn. We have come a long ways in just a few months (and believe me our muscles and bones can tell). Although there is still alot more work to be done, it is usable and hopefully the bunkhouse will be halfway completed in time for the wedding! When completed, it will be 8 stalls with a 12 x 12 feed room, and a 12 x 24 bunkhouse. We also have a front porch that is set up for taking Western Photos in, complete with wagon wheels, rope, spurs, and even a roping steer head.

APHA Kings Southern Pride aka "Biscuit"

This is Biscuit at 3 months old. She is shedding out to be a dark bay and she is quite spoiled!!! It is official, her registered name is APHA Kings Southern Pride. Her mom's name is Dixie and her dad's name is Pride, so that name fits her. Personally I wanted "Sop Er With A Biscuit", but Randy didn't go for that one....I don't know why!

Tehya's First Litter

Tehya has 3 little bundles of joy that will be going to their new homes in about 3 weeks. They were born on July 11th, 2005. I call the first one "Little Bug". Can you figure out why??? She reminds me so much of my Rusty.

Throw on your cowboy hat, chaps, boots, and spurs and join us for a day of celebration! October 1st, 2005. The fun begins at 7:00 p.m. and lasts until the last one drops! Bring your horse trailers or bed rolls so you don't have to drive home in the wee hours of the morning!!! There will also be a Western Background for all our guests to have their Western Photos taken....be sure to dress the part!!! There will be a whole hog on the grill and lots of corn, green beans, and fixin's. Be sure to RSVP to 904-509-0891 so we'll have plenty for everyone!!!

Cowboy

This is our newest addition to our farm. He is a Jack Russell born to our Maverick (mama) and Jesse James (daddy) on May 24th, 2005. Pictured here at 10 weeks old. Maverick had 4 puppies and this was the only male. Although we had no intends of keeping any of the puppies, Cowboy grew on us and has become quite spoiled. He even sleeps in the bed with us! He loves to play with our Labs (9 and 10 months old) and thinks that he is as "big as they are". Thank goodness he will never grow to be as big "as he thinks he is" and Sandie and Magnum take good care of him.

On Memorial Day 2005, we found "Chance" at the auction in Starke. She is a 4 year old APHA mare named "Brothers Blessing". She is a nice addition to the Little Bit O Color side of the farm!!!

At approx. 8:30 p.m. "Biscuit" came into our lives. We named her Biscuit because she looks just like Seabiscuit. No, we have not decided on her registered name yet, although I thought "Sop Her With A Biscuit" sounded too cute!!! Randy and I checked on Dixie as she was eating her dinner at 8:15 p.m. and then went into the house. 20 minutes later, there she was, at least half of her was.....she was still half way in and half way out. Randy had to remove the sack off of her back because she was trying to stand up when she was only half way out! It was a joy to actually be there to see it all. I wouldn't have missed it for the world! She was born on 05/05/05! By the way, the minute she delivered, Dixie got up and went right back to eating!
